LegalEye Budgeting - Hours by Task
Look around other areas of your company, and you'll find different approaches to budgeting, most of which are accurate and flexible enough to respond to changing circumstances.  Can you accurately budget for something as inherently volatile and episodic as litigation? Jim Loeffler argues yes, in this article that he presented at ALM's Controlling Legal Costs Conference in New York earlier this month.

January Poll Question
In 2009, law departments responded to doing more with less by evaluating the merits of legal process outsourcing, exploring alternative fee arrangements and identifying and monitoring key metrics.

What element of controlling legal costs will you prioritize this year?

Council on Litigation ManagementLegalEye™ to Sponsor CLM's Annual Conference
New York, NY--(PR.COM)--1/4/10 --James A. Loeffler, CPA, CFE, Certified Six Sigma Black Belt and President of InTune Business Advisors LLC, has been selected to speak at the 2010 Annual Conference of the Council on Litigation Management (CLM).  Mr. Loeffler is slated to speak on the topic "Crisis Management:  What Do You Do When Managers Depart From Personnel Policies and Standard Operating Procedures?"

The conference will be one of the largest, fully inclusive defense industry conferences in 2010.  It will be held March 24-26 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, will feature approximately 150 speakers and is expected  to draw attendees from around the world.  Registration for the conference is now open at www.litmgmt.org/annual-conference.
Advantage:  "Smaller Companies"
If you think you have to be a Fortune 50 company to make a significant difference in streamlining your legal function with alternative fee arrangements and other tools and techniques, think again.  This article explores the golden opportunity awaiting middle market companies.  We define "middle market" in this case as $1 - $5 billion companies, which typically spend about .5% of their revenues on total internal and external legal costs.  With departments ranging from five to thirty attorneys and assistants, these organizations are in the driver's seat to effect real change, and this article discusses ten actions GCs and law department managers can take.
Reduce costs. Manage expectations. Improve performance.Cost Reduction is only Part of it
During Corporate Counsel's Controlling Legal Costs conference, representatives from CIGNA, DuPont and other companies emphasized the need for taking a holistic and collaborative approach to controlling legal spend.  To merely reduce staff or cut outside legal fees at best can compromise the quality of legal representation, and at worst, increase liability exposure.   Learn what other items you should consider before simply reducing costs.

Thank you for your interest in LegalEye™.  We're glad to have you on our list, and we will not share your email address with anyone.
